Apart from the breathtaking views, the mountain also has healing properties. According to a study, the air in the Rhodopes is among the most healing in the world. It is the only mountain in Bulgaria and one of the few in the world with an extremely high level of negative ionization. According to scientists, negative ions help the brain's alpha waves and increase their amplitude. They also have a therapeutic effect on runny noses, sinusitis, bronchial asthma, allergies, migraines, labour and post-operative pain.<\/p><p>An experiment conducted in the UK in the 1980s on two groups of post-operative patients, one of whom was in conditions of high negative ion concentration (10,000 per cc) for 3 days, showed an 80% faster recovery.
